Herbert George Nash was born in April 1896 in Worcester, Worcestershire, the son of George and Elizabeth Nash. He grew up in a large family with three brothers—William, Walter, and Edgar—and four sisters: Alice, Annie, Ada, and Constance.

According to the 1901 Census, Herbert was five years old and living with his family in Worcester. His father worked as a packer at the Iron Works, while his older sister Ada was employed as a dressmaker.

By the time of his enlistment, Herbert was living in Troedrhiwfuwch, South Wales, likely residing with or near his brother Walter Nash, who lived at 7 Lawrence Terrace. He enlisted in Bargoed and served as a Private (No. 34212) in the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment.

Tragically, Herbert was killed in action in France on 2 October 1915, during the Battle of Loos, one of the largest British offensives on the Western Front that year. He was just 19 years old.
His name is engraved on the Loos Memorial in France, which commemorates soldiers who have no known grave, and whose bravery and sacrifice remain woven into the fabric of their communities.

A poignant family memory was shared by his great-grandniece, Samantha Wilson:
“We remembered that in our collection of family documents we have an old Bible with an inscription inside. The inscription states that the Bible was a gift to Mr and Mrs Nash (Herbert & Walters parents) from the people of Troedrhiwfuwch and Sebastopol in honour of Herbert's sacrifice during the Great War”

This personal artifact is a moving reminder of the respect and gratitude shown by the local community to the Nash family, and of the enduring legacy of Herbert's ultimate sacrifice.
