HAROLD THOMAS JOHN(S)

Harold was born in Maerdy, Ystradyfodwg in 1882 to John & Caroline John. He had 2 sisters Mary and Mabel and 1 brother John (Bernard).

​

In 1891 Harold is 9 and lives at 29 High Street with his mother and siblings. His mother is living by her own means and his father has died. His father John was the School Master – Headmaster of the Board School, Maerdy. John John died December 1885 when Harold was only 4.

Harold could have attended Troedrhiwfuwch School before attending Lewis Boys School, Pengam. He was granted a Scholarship and was featured in the newspaper for his achievements.

Harold attended Aberystwyth University from 1900. He spent time overseas in the West Indies – Dominica before embarking from Trinidad and sailing back to London with The Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. “Orotava” on November 9th, 1914. He is described in the passenger list (3rd Class) as a Harbour Master in Dominica. According to this list Dominica was his last permanent residence before returning to the UK. His address on his return is Lark Rise Hall, Clapham.

He enlisted for war service and served as Second Lieutenant Welsh Regiment 9th Battalion attd. 8th Battalion. He was Killed in Action January 11th 1917, he is remembered with honour at Panel 24 Basra Memorial.
